India firmly behind Palestine: Pranab
- Oct, 2015: President Pranab Mukherjee met his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, Gaza.
- Pranab Mukherjee reiterated India’s economic and political support for the Palestinians.
- Announced some projects aimed at capacity building in the Palestinian territories.
- India reiterated that it would continue to support resolution on the formation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 border at the UN.
Pranab stresses India’s balancing act
- President reiterated India’s principled support to the Palestine cause and called for a negotiated solution resulting in a sovereign, independent, viable and united state of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living within secure and recognized borders, side by side at peace with Israel as endorsed in the Quartet Roadmap and relevant UNSC [UN Security Council] resolutions
- “Quartet on the Middle East” — proposed by the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.
President described Israel as “one of the most important countries for India.”
- At the same time, the President described Israel as “one of the most important countries for India.”
- President comments that religion should not be the basis of state, he cited Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Israel ‘upset’ with India’s ties with Palestine
- Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told President Pranab Mukherjee that Israel expects India to change its stand towards Palestine.
- But diplomatic sources said a paradigm shift in India’s foreign policy is practically impossible.
- Knesset = parliament of Israel.
